Real Estate Downtown Victoria & Calgary

Living downtown Victoria myself I certainly know how convenient it is to be able to walk, run, bike to most places. This especially true here in Victoria with the mild climate we have. Many of our clients consider this when purchasing real estate here in Victoria.

A recent article in the Times Colonist talks about two  young Canadian Athletes in Calgary. It reads:

He doesn’t eat eight eggs for breakfast, like fellow Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.

In fact, 24-year-old Calgarian Mike Brown has a modest, rather ordinary breakfast — but it’s still a breakfast of champions. And he wants his kitchen to be that of a winner as well.

That is one reason why the swimmer, who competed against eight-time Olympic medal winner Michael Phelps in the breaststroke competition in the Beijing Olympics this summer, is moving into the new condo he chose in Calgary.

He is part of a tide of young people who are moving back to downtown areas where people don’t need to take the car everytime they want to go anywhere.

He bought a wide-open, modern condominium apartment unit in Colours by Battistella.

Coincidentally, a fellow Olympian, 23-year-old Nathan Gafuik, bought the same unit just six floors down from Brown’s 16th floor new home in the sky.

Gafuik is a gymnast who competed in six events at the recent Olympics, and he is working toward being a competitor once again in London in 2012.

“We both train at the University of Calgary, so I knew of Mike, but it wasn’t until we were together in Beijing that we found out we had each purchased a home in Colours,” says Gafuik. “We didn’t know we bought the same unit until now.”

Both athletes bought west-facing, 750-square-foot units with one bedroom and a den, although there are several other plans available.

The wide-open plan has innovative design features that are standard, such as the polished concrete floors, 9.5-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall windows, stainless steel appliances, and granite countertops.

One feature that caught Gafuik’s imagination was the movable, frosted-glass partition wall separating the great room from the bedroom and den.

“The design is unique and more trendy,” he says. “The sliding glass wall opens up the suite, too, so it looks and feels much bigger.”

Colours by Battistella is geared to attract people just like the two Olympians, says Paul Battistella, president of the company his parents founded more than a quarter of a century ago.

Its edgy design, wide-open concept, and the use of funky, contemporary materials appeal to the young generation looking for chic urban living close to the action.

Colours is a 23-storey, 208-unit, ultra-modern tower in Calgary’s newest trendy area.

Across the street, another condo tower is under construction, and a block away, is Battistella’s first tower, Chocolate.

The condos are within walking distance of everything from the river pathway system, to Talisman Centre, the Stampede grounds, the Saddledome, and the shops, services, and entertainment venues of the vibrant “Red Mile” and 4th Street S.W.

That was part of the charm of Colours for the two Calgarians.

“I am looking forward to being more central to the downtown core,” says Brown. “A lot of my friends live down here, and I can walk anywhere. All the things I enjoy are within close proximity.”

Value is here, he says.

Brown already owns his own condo and, although it, too, is close to the inner city, it isn’t as convenient as the new one will be, he says. “I was looking for something a little more central.” End of Article.
