Victoria BC Real Estate Going Green.
Real Estate in Victoria BC is in strong demand and there are many interesting condominium projects in Victoria. One of them is the Dockside Green. Green Real Estate is fast becoming a buzz word here in Victoria.
Dockside Green just last night received the Excellence in Urban Sustainability award from the GLOBE Foundation as part of their awards for environmental excellence at the GLOBE international conference in Vancouver last night.
“To be recognized for this award when there are so many exceptional sustainable urban projects underway around the world is truly an honour,” said Joe Van Belleghem, developer of Dockside Green. “We are particularly proud to receive this acknowledgement because these awards were started by Maurice Strong, a personal inspiration for the Dockside Green project.”
The award category recognizes that the key to building liveable, vibrant, world-class cities is the planning and practice of urban sustainability. Dockside Green was recognized for its combination of environmental, social and economic planning which have shaped the community to be a world leader in urban sustainability principles.Other nominees in the category included the Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 project in Dubai and the Vancouver-based 2010 Olympic Village.
“This is been quite a journey for us as we continue to pursue our goal of building a triple bottom line community that will serve as a model for other developers in B.C. and around the world,” said Elain Duvall, chair of the board of directors, Vancity Enterprises. “This award is timely as we have just received our first occupancy permit and residents will soon be moving into their new homes at Dockside Green.”
Dockside Green, a partnership between Windmill West and Vancity, is located on a remediated brownfield site on the harbour in Victoria, B.C. The project has committed to target all buildings to be LEED platinum, a North America first. On full build out, it will be the first large, community-scale development in North America to be green house gas positive from a building energy perspective, through utilizing a biomass gasification system.
Joe Van Belleghem spoke on a panel about net-zero energy building design at the GLOBE conference. Local partners of the Dockside Green project, Peter Busby, director of Busby Perkins + Will, Michael Scott from Nexterra Energy Corp., and Gary Hamer from BC Hydro were also sharing innovations and sustainability practices at the conference which attracted delegates from over 80 countries.
